With the departure of Kyle Neptune to become the new coach for Villanova after Jay Wright’s retirement, Fordham players made it abundantly clear who they wanted as their new head coach.

As soon as the news broke of Neptune taking the Villanova job, Chuba Ohams, the best player on last year’s Rams team, took to Twitter with this tweet.

Ohams won’t be on the team next year, and neither will Antonio Daye Jr, who left the team midseason due to personal reasons, transferred to Coastal Carolina, and will play there next year if he pulls out of the NBA Draft, but that didn’t stop him from chiming in.

Players that will be on the 2022–23 roster also chimed in, including Kyle Rose and Antrell Charlton

Even players’ families got involved, Darius Quisenberry’s mother chimed in, calling Urgo “a proven winner”

Last night, the news broke that Urgo would indeed be named the next head coach of a Fordham program on the upswing. In Neptune’s only year in between his stints as Villanova assistant and Villanova head man, he went 16–16 and advanced to the Atlantic-10 Quarterfinals despite his leading scorer leaving the team midseason and having his other 2 best players miss time due to injury as well. Not only were the Rams successful on the court, but they brought in their best recruiting class since 2008. Urgo will inherit 4-star Will Richardson, 3-star Angel Montas, and 3-star Romad Dean for next year’s team.

Urgo coached at Villanova under Wright for 5 years after spending his first few years after graduating from Fairfield University out of the college game. In 2011, Urgo accepted a job as an assistant at Penn State, and two years later, he became the associate head coach. After a decade in State College, which was pretty successful for the Nittany Lions, he was named the associate head coach at Fordham under Neptune in May of last year.

Urgo was one of the nation’s top assistant coaches when he was at Penn State, and while Fordham wishes they could’ve kept Neptune, they feel that Urgo can continue what was started.
